Associate Professor Marta Andhov holds a joint appointment in the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Auckland.
Her work sits at a critical juncture: where government spending meets corporate accountability.
Internationally recognised for her expertise in public procurement law, contract law and sustainability, Marta examines how billions in public contracts can drive or hinder environmental and social progress.
Her research spans public and private law, international trade, and competition law, but with a distinctive focus: integrating sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and ESG principles into the legal frameworks that govern how governments buy goods and services.
Throughout her career, Marta has worked to professionalize procurement, making it more competitive, transparent, and resilient to modern challenges. Her contributions have helped pioneer sustainability standards in governmental contracts, particularly within European Union public procurement law.
She has advised the World Trade Organization, the United Nations, the European Commission and Parliament, and the International Labour Organization. Her work with the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply in Australia, various Australian state governments, and the Attorney-General’s Chambers in Singapore reflects the practical reach of her expertise. The European Court of Justice has cited her research, and organisations regularly seek her guidance on sustainability readiness and compliance strategies.
Before Auckland, Marta was an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen, where she led major international research initiatives. She founded the PurpLE project (Purchase Power – Sustainable Public Procurement through Private Law Enforcement), funded by the Carlsberg Foundation with NZD 1.2 million, exploring how contract law and arbitration intersect with sustainability and innovation in public procurement.
She also co-led the EU Horizon 2020 SAPIENS project, which received approximately NZD 7 million to establish the first international academic network dedicated to sustainable public procurement. SAPIENS brings together 10 EU universities and 19 partner organisations—including George Washington University—to train 14 PhD researchers across law, economics, and supply chain management.
Marta has held visiting positions at Pace University (New York), King’s College London, Arizona State University as a Fulbright Scholar, and the University of Western Australia
